View Full Version : What custom exhaust to run ???

I am working on building a project car .. basically, its a 1991 Thunderbird built with parts from MANY cars ..

The engine I am using is from a 2003 Explorer, Aluminum block 4.6 with the PI heads, and I will be using the Tbird accessories and front cover + fuel rails, etc ..
So its going to be basically stock with a few driveline modifications, and I MAY consider upgrading to a supercharger setup later on down the road ( possibly the AED kit with the M90, maybe the 9 PSI version )

Not sure about Headers at the moment, Kooks cost a fortune, and I have a set of JBA's that suck ( they cracked and pinch down at the primaries, where they were welded to the flanges on the insides of the tubes ) ... so I may end up using the factory manifolds and port them out slightly.

I have NO exhaust at the moment and need to run something better than the quasi dual exhaust the car comes with in stock form. ( dual downpipes with cats, to a 3rd dual in single out Cat, resonator, exhaust snakes through the gas tank, pinches down, and splits to two stock mufflers ) ...

I have a set of downpipes from a 2001 Mach 1 Mustang, I believe its 2.5" with 4 cats and an H pipe. I was considering adapting this to my car. Then maybe running two Borla Mufflers before the gas tank, and dumping the exhaust right there.

Anybody have any suggestions or ideas ?? I dont know anything about fluid dynamics to have the right amount of exhaust velocity with pipe sizes, or how much backpressure I may need. All I know is I want it to perform good and sound agressive. Not worried about smog either, this car may only see the track.

Thanks for looking
