I am interested in taking my 98 cobra convertible out there and throwing it around the cones. As a novice can I just go out there with a convertible with no roll bar and run in one of these SCCA Solo II class weekend races? Was hoping to go out to one of these events here this summer to feel the limits of the car after I get it lowered and the suspension dialed in.

I use to race scca solo II in maui and there where alot of verts with no roll bars. Some of the things they check are battery hold downs, seat belt,no bald tires. If you go let me know I'll come run too.

For SCCA you can run without the role bar. And mustangdakine is correct. Part of the safety inspection includes: Battery hold down, no excessive fluid leaks, good brake pedal, and tires with some rubber. Also you need a helmet. The loaner helmets are extremely uncomfortable. You can run two events without being an SCCA member for an extra fee. Nice thing is the extra fee can count towards your annual membership. Just remembered, if your not an SCCA member you need a friend who is a member who will "sponsor" you. (in other words will vouch you being sane)

Thanks for all the information. My car definately would qualify all those test.....guess I just would need to get myself a helmet...and find someone to qualify that I am sane. From what I have been reading on the internet it sounds like a blast.
I am definately going to have to try this. I am looking at maybe doing it May 15th here in Sacramento at Mather Field. I will still have my stock setup then and it would be interesting to run it before and after I do my suspension mods.

Count me in if you go this summer. I also heard the nor cal racing group is a good club to go with. They like Thunderhill which has plenty of runoff if you get a little crazy, only problem is that it's 100+ miles north of Sacto.

Hey Bruce....sounds good...I will drop you a message. I will probably post up in the Sac forum as well. THe solo II series is also pertty affordable relatively speaking v open tracking as far as I have found on the internet.
The Solo II series runs a twice a month at Mather Field all the way through August....I have targeted July 18th as I should have my suspension mods done by then. Hope you can make it out too.

I got it marked too.......I will post up a reminder about a couple weeks in advance.
Looking forward to this. THe cost is $45 for the day (this includes the $15 temporary SCCA membership...and like others have said if you decide to join the $15 goes towards your yearly membership). Only other thing I got to do is locate a helmet....or you can always borrow one they have there for people without one.
Here is a link to info and more details on the events:

And that page also has a link to the Sacramento group. I plan of doing all the recommended reading before I go out in July.....its nothing to involved and easy read.
Really excited about this............Bruce what car you bringing out? The 00R?

This sounds like fun I always wondered their stance on verts. Stuff liek this has always interested me more then straight line driving. As far as helmets go yeah you can get a good DOT approved helmet on ebay for not much.

Yeah I am debating if I want to try and get a cheap helmet off of ebay or just use one of the loaner helmets they have. Others have posted the loaners are not comfortable....but I a little reluctant to buy one as I don't know how into this I will ever get.
I know it will be fun to try at leat once.
And yeah come one come all on July 18th. We will have to set up some sort of meet up spot in the morning close by Mather so we can all drive in together. I will post some ideas as we get closer.
